The idea was to simulate the anatomical sections obtained by a longitudinal endosonographic instrument with the VOXEL-MAN 3-D Model.

The direction of view was quite another one as in the usual applications generated with the data of the visible human project:
it is not from the outer shape into the inner organs but from the lumen of the upper gastrointestinal tract to the adjacent structures.

Thus a virtual ultrasound transducer with a longitudinal array is positioned into the gastrointestinal tract of VOXEL-MAN and simulates the anatomical sections in steps of 1°.

A complete simulation of the anatomy at 6 reference positions in the upper gastrointestinal tract is achieved.

Reference positions

EUS meets VOXEL-MAN contains more than 400 high quality pictures from these 6 reference positions of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
The upper left image shows the position of the transducer in the body.
The upper right image shows the corresponding anatomical section.
The lower right picture shows the ultrasound image that corresponds to the image above.

Picture from the atlas

Each chapter offers a high resolution video showing in detail all aspects of the method investigating normal anatomy including many tips and tricks improving the examination technique.
Chapter 1 : Multimedia DVD
Chapter 2 : Introduction
Chapter 3 : Principles of Endoscopic Ultrasound
Chapter 4 : Instrument technology
Chapter 5 : Normal Anatomy of the Wall of the Gastrointestinal Tract
Chapter 6 : Normal Anatomy of the Mediastinum, the Paragastral and Paraduodenal Organs

The left picture shows the position of the ultrasound transducer in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
The right picture shows the corresponding section obtained also in real ultrasound imaging.
Moving the mouse simulates the movements of the endoscope in the body: complete rotation and angulation.
The object list of VOXEL-MAN defines all anatomical structures by simply clicking the right key of the mouse.

Flexible learning and teaching

The user interface integrates all components of "EUS meets VOXEL-MAN".
The screentext with links provides the didactical context.
The user interface provides direct access to the videos, the atlas and VOXEL-MAN.
Parts of these components are integrated into the learning context (screentext) but all components can be accessed separately.
The navigation pictogram shows always the position of the tranducer in the body.
